Reinstate
the Garden
Didn’t "Adam and Eve" start out in a garden?
Where has it gone? With the ebb and flow of civilization,
and now eight billion people on the planet, it’s an
important time for us to ‘reinstate’ the "garden".
Freedom From Industrialized Agriculture
Whether it be sprouts and greens in the kitchen or sunny
window, growing edibles in our yard, or restoring land to
which we have access, we can create our own little space
of growing things, and free ourselves from the cycle of
industrialized agriculture. Petroleum has inflated production
beyond the natural carrying capacity of the land, filling
our supermarkets, yet depleting soils, with pesticides,
fertilizers, genetically engineered foods and other commercial
agriculture practices.
Sustainable Land Use Ethic
Humans
cannot survive for long without a sustainable land use ethic.
Permaculture, from the words permanent and agriculture,
as stated by its founder Bill Mollison, “aims
to create systems that are ecologically sound and economically
viable, providing for our needs, without pollution or exploitation,
and therefore sustainable in the long term".
Working
With Nature
By shopping at local farm markets and supporting local growers
we reinstate the "garden". When we learn how to
compost, mulch and mineralize to regenerate rich soils;
when we replace water guzzling grass with "yardening"
- a concept of naturalizing our yards into organic, productive
growing areas, we cultivate the "garden" around
us and begin to renew the cycle of working with nature rather
than against it – so very necessary to the future
of our Earth Village.
